Update: After co-starring in this year’s Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, it seems like Barry Keoghan will be sitting out the upcoming sequel series. It’s been confirmed that Jamie Bell has been recast as Duke Shelby for the upcoming show, which marks the second time this character has been recast in this franchise to date. Previously, Conrad Khan played the younger version of the character in series six of the show. The show is to be set ten years after the events of The Immortal Man, placing it in the early 1950s. Joining Bell is Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as the co-lead, alongside Jessica Brown Findlay, Lashana Lynch, and Lucy Karczewski.

    Original story follows:

Two more, by order of the Peaky Blinders! The acclaimed British gangster drama Peaky Blinders, which concluded in 2022 with its sixth series, will be coming back to our television sets, thanks to a two-season renewal from BBC and Netflix. The show, still untitled, will be set after the events of the upcoming film The Immortal Man, which will take a look at both the gang and Birmingham during the events of the Second World War.

The new show, which will see the return of creator Steven Knight and series lead Cillian Murphy as a producer, will follow the exploits of the Shelby family in 1953 in a post-war environment. The logline is as follows:

“Britain, 1953. After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel. In a new era of Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders, the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions. This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger: with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.”

On the show’s vision, Knight stated, “Once again, it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride.”

This strongly suggests that the show will be a bit of a baton pass for the generations, likely with a new lead and cast of characters to familiarize ourselves with. Cillian Murphy’s Tommy may or may not be around at this time, but the actor is at least involved with the creative process as an executive. As to who may be the show’s new lead, that remains to be seen, but there’s no shortage of children in the original show who could’ve grown up to become important figures in the gang/Shelby Company Ltd. The new show will encompass two series, each being six episodes in length, and like The Immortal Man, will shoot at Knight’s Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham.

The original Peaky Blinders show, which ran for six seasons, chronicled the rise of the Peaky Blinders gang in the aftermath of the First World War. Aside from Murphy, actors such as Sam Neil, Helen McCrory, Annabelle Wallis, Tom Hardy, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundel, Adrien Brody, Aiden Gillen, Paddy Considine, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Sam Claflin (among many others) over the course of its run. If you’ve not watched it, I’d highly recommend it. It’s great.
